Unfortunately, Madagascar was again hit by a cyclone on Friday. The east suffered from a lot of rain and very strong winds. At the time of writing, the official figures are more than 100,000 homeless, 29 dead and 22 missing. Four of the five main roads on the island have been closed since Friday due to various landslides, washed-out bridges and flooded roads.

In the aftermath of Cyclone Enawo, HoverAid worked with the villages along the Rianila River that were decimated by flooding. We distributed 4.5 tonnes of rice and emergency food supplies for 200 families, 20 carpentery kits, 30 fishing kits and vegetable, seed and sweet potato plants for 200 families.
HoverAid also constructed a vital bridge and re-roofed the local school.

We have begun distributing tools for a number of carpenters, so that the rebuilding of houses can begin. The tarpaulins we have distributed have been very well received: these villages are situated on the edge of the rain forest and it rains here most days.

Peter, Tantely, and James are now pushing north from Moramanga towards Ambatondrazaka on Lac Alaotra an area we understand was badly affected by the cyclone and the deluge of rain it dropped.

The impact of Cyclone Enawo is only beginning to become apparent – this photo from yesterday shows the only road between the capital city Antananarivo and the main port for the whole country in Tamatave on the east coast severed by landslides. This is Madagascar’s main trading route and all of Antananarivo’s vehicle fuel and oil for power stations comes up this road.
News is beginning to filter in on social media from affected areas, however the vast majority of the North of Madagascar is currently uncontactable hence the urgent requirement for survey teams to physically reach areas and speak to communities.
HoverAid Madagascar Country Director Peter van Buuren and the Tana team have been gathering as much information as they can to make sure our response is as efficiently targeted as possible. Today (Friday 10th March) we have allowed office staff to go and visit their families locally and make sure they are ok; the workshop team however are flat out getting vehicles prepared.
Hovercraft Pilot Jose Andrianariliva has spent two days getting back from Mahajanga – we are now servicing the Land Cruiser so we can send the team back to the North. Jose has been in the field for the past two months and deservedly was pretty exhausted having outrun the Storm. We’re glad he made it back safe and sound.
